The Define Stage is the second part of the Design Thinking Process where the design thinker defines a meaningful and actionable problem statement while focusing on a solution. The design thinker can provide analysis and synthesis from observations about the users from the first stage, the Empathize Stage. In other words, a definition of your problem statement will allow for clarity and focus to the guide of the Ideation Stage. For example, a great definition of your problem statement will identify the gap between the current state (i.e. the problem) and the desired state (i.e. the goal) of a process or product. This can be done by asking the Five W’s: Who, What, When, Where, Why.
